Which Type of Bicycle Rider

There are many bicycle riders. There are people that love to race, people who love to tour, some like to take a simple ride in the park. However, there are some who commute to work by bike. For me this is the most inspiring biker of them all. These cyclists commute to work everyday, rain, sleet, snow or shine. For several months of the year I ride my bike to work several times a week. Unfortunately, I will not be that inspiring as my commute is only 5 miles each way and quite frankly I don’t ride if it is too cold or too wet.

A couple days ago I was taking my 3rd ride of the year which was supposed to be a quick 20 mile ride (quick is defined much differently at the beginning of the riding season). During the ride I saw another biker on the road and we decided to share the work, as we had a very heavy headwind. He was on a beautiful customized seven titanium bike, all set up for commuting. It had disc brakes, full fenders, lights and a leather front bag. During our ride he told me he commutes year-round and it is a 50 mile round trip commute. Whenever I run into bikers like this guy I am inspired and envious. In the middle of the summer I am convinced I will ride through the winter and stay in shape…. and then the temperature goes south of 45 and all bets are off.

There are three reasons why I consider the commuter the most inspiring. One, the commuter is on the road all the time and very visible for all people to take notice. This is important as it reminds motor vehicles to watch out for all of us. Second, it shows everybody how a bicycle is a credible transportation alternative. Third, as a bicycle injury lawyer, commuters are a good example of have to be safe when you ride. They always wear visible clothes, have lights, fenders and ride with the traffic.  All good examples of how to be safe on the road. The commuter makes any excuse the rest of us have to not ride moot!!! No more, it is too…. (fill in blank) to ride!!

Ride. Be Safe. Have Fun.
