Two recent deaths in San Antonio remind us of one of the real dangers cyclists face: drunk drivers. In the span of just eight weeks, two cyclists have been killed by drunk drivers. Tito Bradshaw, owner of a social club and founder of an up-and-coming bicycle shop was killed just after midnight on April 1, 2019. He was struck by a 67-year-old woman who has been charged with intoxication assault. Bradshaw was just 35 and was viewed as a leader in the cycling community.

Fifty-eight year old surgeon Naji Kayruz died on February 4, 2019, as he rode his bike along an I-10 access road. Kayruz was struck by woman who has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

These were two cyclists, riding their bikes in their home city, just as they should be free to do. They did nothing wrong, but in an instant, their lives were taken by an inebriated driver. Their families and friends will suffer their loss in the years to come. The loss leaves some residents speculating if a better infrastructure for cyclists would have prevented these deaths. Regardless of what changes may come from their deaths, their loss will affect the entire community.

When a cyclist is struck by a driver, their injuries are often severe or, in these cases, fatal. There is no amount of money that will bring back the lives of these two powerful individuals. Still, the responsible parties must be held accountable for their actions. In addition to their criminal offenses, they and their insurance providers should be held accountable to provide fair and just compensation for the loss of these two great men. In such cases, the loss is simply immeasurable.

If you’ve been hurt in a bicycle crash, even if you feel you might partially be responsible, contact Kass & Moses. Our attorneys will speak with you and provide you guidance based on the details of your case. Contact us today to learn how we can help you.
