Suffering on a bike…

One of the thoughts I struggle with in my ongoing attempt to  become a “stronger” rider is how much do I enjoy suffering.  If you ask me this question when I am on the couch, I would answer “as little as possible”.  Of course we all know that you can’t improve your biking (speed, distance, comfort) without some serious suffering during training.   When I start most rides, I begin with thoughts like these ” I want to take a pleasurable 25-60 mile ride”.  However,  as I soon start to ride, I invariably start taking notice of my speed, cadence and Heart Rate and have an instinctual desire to see the first two rise and the latter fall.    Further, If I see another group go past me at a faster pace, I seem to have “group jealousy” and want to join it..    So for me I have decided that I enjoy two types of rides, one where I can cruise along myself or in a group at a pace that is comfortable the entire time (16-19 mph) or a short ride that is intense.   Though, if you ask me I will never mention that short intense ride!

I am curious what others feel, So  free free to respond to the survey below..

Do you suffer when you ride?
