There have been some limited examples where a company instituted a policy that would pay any employee to ride their bicycle  to work.   I believe this would actually SAVE the employer money while helping the employee have more money.  That is what we call a true win/win situation.   A perfect arrangement or agreement in life is a win/win… and this is one of them.   Further, the IRS code does allow an employee to be reimbursed up to $20 per month for bike commuting expenses.

The real benefit is much, much greater than a measly $20 month.  From the employer side, the company will  have an employee who will be more energized, happy and ultimately more productive at work.  In addition, the employee will stay healthier and need less sick days. The employer may be able to have a smaller parking lot, saving trees while spending less money.  The employee will have far fewer transportation expenses, and less wear and tear on their motor vehicle. The employee will be fitter and take fewer sick days while being more productive at work. The employee may feel more content and be less likely to search for another job. This is not a new idea: France is currently having a trial of paying 10,000 people to ride to work, click here for the article.  Another perk is the simple fact that the more people bike the safer we all are. Statistics have clearly shown that as the number of people bike the safe it becomes. So start riding your bicycle to work!

Ride.  Be Safe.  Have Fun
