Biking in Chicago during the Winter

I must say, the expression “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” applies to me when it comes to continuing to ride outside during the winter  I was all set to ride through whatever the Chicago winter could throw at me in November and then December came….  Boy, it turns out that my resolve was not as strong as single digit temperatures and minus wind chills.

So after gaining a few, ok, several pounds I decided I would have to figure a way to ride indoors.  Well I stumbled across a company called Trainer Road.   I must say for me, this online platform is a game changer.  I mentioned it before in a previous blog but have now spent more time using it and am really sold on it.   In fact I would consider using it even during the summer when there is rain.  To be clear it is not even close as satisfying as riding outside but does provide a very good workout with a few extra benefits you can’t get outside.  First, there are no motor vehicles to hit you.   Now this might sound obvious, but as a bicycle accident lawyer, I see and represent victims of bicycle accidents everyday, so this is important.   Second,  while you ride you watch the computer screen and the software of trainer road gives you instructions in real time.  Your computer is hooked up to your heart and speed/cadence monitor.  It is able to determine your virtual power..  This is critical, especially for bikers that have not footed the bill for a power meter.   For $10/month  you get a virtual coach and train by power, the very best indicator of fitness.  I have no interest in the company but urge you to check it out.  www.trainerroad.com

Ride. Be Safe Have Fun.
