Minneapolis, one of the first cities in the US to implement a large scale bike sharing program, is now becoming one of the safest bike cities in the country. In a recent article by Minneapolis Public Works Director Steve Kotke, he outlines what is necessary to improve, and keep improving, the city’s bike and general transportation safety. With Chicago introducing its Divvy Bike program later this month, the article should be read by everyone, bikers and drivers alike. In New York, where the CitiBike program has had mixed reviews, the most weighty concern is safety while navigating the busy city streets. But if Minneapolis’ bike program is being imitated throughout the country, why can’t its safety standards? There are now more bikes on the streets of Minneapolis than ever before, but less accidents. That’s good news for every city that shares some of New Yorkers’ serious safety concerns. Sure, it may take time for everyone to adjust to the dramatic influx of bicycles, especially on the crowded streets of a big city where big tempers flare. But there should be no reason to be discouraged of the success of such programs if everyone can make a more conscious effort to protect everyone’s safety.
