New York City is adding bicycle laser lights to their fleet of Citi Bikes to increase road safety. Blaze Laserlights, designed to improve visibility by projecting the image of a bike about 20 feet ahead of the rider, will be incorporated into a number of the 250 bikes as part of a test program. The lights are 300-lumens, enough to be easily visible to others on the road, and are designed to increase the footprint of the cyclist on the road.
Bicycle Laser Lights Latest in Safety Innovations
Jay Walder, president and CEO of Motivate, the company responsible for Citi Bike operations stated, “By incorporating Blaze’s lights into the bike, we aim to keep New Yorkers on foot, behind the wheel, and riding a Citi Bike safer, and to improve the rider experience overall so that people of all backgrounds are inspired to try New York City’s popular bike share program.”

The laser lights help level the playing field on congested New York City streets. While the gimmick is certainly going to attract new riders, it is sure to save lives as well. Citi Bikes have been in operation since 2013 and, during that time, have completed nearly 37 million trips. Thus far, the bikes have proven quite safe, with few serious injuries and no cycling deaths.
Council Member Ben Kallos stressed that the bicycle laser lights are considered “an innovative way to keep pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers safe.” The lights are the latest addition in a commitment to keep the streets of New York City safe for all.
The bicycle laser lights are currently in use in London, where 75 percent of bikers say they increase their confidence while riding. Bus drivers reported that it is easier to see and react to cyclists on the road around them.
Motivate will survey Citi Bike users to regarding the effectiveness of the Laserlight test and consider extending the enhancement to the rest of the bikes in the fleet. Have you seen the bicycle laser light in action on New York City streets? Check it out in this video:
