Bicycle Injury Lawyer’s Tips on Safe Night Time Riding

There is an old adage in real estate that says the three most important things are “Location, Location and Location”.  When riding your bicycle at night the three most important things are “be seen, be seen and be seen”.

When you ride your bicycle at night, it is critical you have lights in front and back.  These lights serve two purposes, one is to see and the other is to be seen.  My opinion is that if you have very powerful lights in front (500 lumens or greater), you will be seen.  It is also important to wear reflective clothing.

If you ride very early in the morning you have the advantage of less vehicles on the road and with very powerful lights you can be seen more easily than at night.  However, very early in the morning, motor vehicles may not be looking for bicycles, so pay extra attention when you come across a motor vehicle.

Remember one of the best ways to be seen is to ride in a way that is consistent with what a motor vehicle will be expecting.  This means traveling with traffic.  Not riding on sidewalks.  When necessary take the lane of traffic, if the roadway is too narrow and you feel cars will pass you too closely.

Ride.  Be Safe.  Have Fun.
