Best way to avoid average bike rides is to not worry about your average!

If you really want to not have an average ride,  then try not worrying about your average!!  I know it will seem crazy to ride without your heart rate monitor on and with your Garmin shut off.  However, it is the perfect way to have a real “recovery” ride and also have the time to actually look around and smell the roses.

It Seems that many of us have a natural competitive spirit.  This will cause most of us to be concerned about our  average (insert here, speed, cadence, heart rate, etc) when we ride. There is nothing wrong with comparing your metrics from one ride to the next as it is a good indication of your fitness level and also provides enjoyment.  However, I noticed that my most enjoyable rides have nothing to do with my average speed or how I did on Strava.   In fact,  for me what makes the ride most enjoyable ride has everything to do with who I am writing with and all the sights, sounds and smell I experience.   It is important in my humble opinion to never forget that first and foremost riding a bike should be fun!   In fact even professional riders create the thereabout rides for this very reason.   Here is a link to a great article about professional riders that want simply to ride for fun.

As always,

Ride.  Be Safe.  Have Fun.
