Bike hacks are quick, easy tips that can solve a myriad of problems, from a flat tire to wet shoes. Although these hacks may not be the most effective fixes, they are easy to implement with items you usually have around.
- Funky taste in your water bottle? To prevent germ growth, you should wash your water bottle after every use. If you use dish detergent, though, you may notice a slightly soapy taste next time you take a swig of water. Instead, wash water bottles and lids with baking soda and water. Also, be sure to remove rubber seals to prevent mold growth.
- Wet shoes? Stuff them with wads of newspaper or balled up paper towels. Change out a couple of times as they absorb the moisture.
- Biking on a cold, windy day? Did you forget your jacket? Simply layer a newspaper inside your shirt. You can either ball it up or just lay the sheets flat against your body. This unconventional hack will keep out both cold and wind.
- Rainy day? Protect your seat and prevent yourself from getting a wet bum. Cover the seat with a grocery bag. Secure it by tying the back in a knot or by looping a rubber band around it. Your seat will remain dry throughout the rainy day.
- Shine your frame! Think Lemon Pledge is just for furniture? Think again! Coat your frame liberally with lemon pledge and then wipe it down for a brilliant shine. It will also help prevent fingerprints and greasy build-up on your frame, and is far cheaper than alternative bike products.
- Greasy after working on your bike? Skip the hand soap and use Dawn dish detergent, instead. Dawn has built-in degreasers which will quickly cut the grease on your fingers and hands. Keep a nail brush around to get the liquid Dawn under your fingernails to clean them, too!
- Prevent your feet from getting wet on a rainy day. Before donning your socks, either wrap your feet in plastic wrap or stick each foot into a plastic baggy. Bike as usual, without any concern of your feet getting wet. If you sweat a lot through your feet, fold up a paper towel and place inside the baggy.
- Punctured a tire but you don’t have a fix kit with you? No problem! Place a folded dollar bill on the inner wall of the tire, against the puncture site, and inflate the tire as usual. An energy bar wrapper, gum wrapper, or chips bag can work just as well. Obviously this fix is just meant to keep you going long enough to get a repair.
- Zip ties are your friend! When you’ve got a piece of wobbly equipment or an out-of-true wheel, a zip tie or two is a great quick-fix.
Bike hacks are great for a quick fix, but remember that proper maintenance and attention will prevent many problems. Whenever possible, ride prepared with the gear that you may need.
