Concussions and traumatic brain injuries are common when cyclists crash. As motorcycle crash attorneys, we have seen the results of hundreds of bicycle accidents and strongly believe all cyclists should wear a helmet. But remember, all helmets are not created equally. Here is why your next helmet should utilize MIPS technology for added safety.
What are MIPS Helmets?
MIPS technology, or the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, utilizes slip-plane technology to reduce friction and rotational force of some impacts. In a bicycle crash, head impact is linear, rotational, or (often) a combination of both. Traditional helmets absorb much of the impact of a linear impact. But in a rotational impact, the MIPS helmet mimics the support provided by the cerebrospinal fluid of the head. It does so by the addition of a low friction layer that allows the helmet to slide. Although it moves just a few millimeters, this small movement is enough to reduce the injury caused by a rotational impact.

MIPS Helmet Testing
Virginia Tech has been testing and analyzing helmets for the past ten years. Their study has been independent, without bias or funding from any particular helmets or brands. They tested helmets in a number of different simulations. Their goal was to determine which helmets most effectively minimize the risk of concussion. The study concluded that MIPS helmets are best for reducing head injuries, including those responsible for traumatic brain injury.
Head injuries and concussions occur frequently as a result of bicycle accidents. Mild traumatic brain injury, or a concussion, presents with confusion, a headache, and nausea. More significant head injury often involves a lapse of consciousness, ongoing inability to think or concentrate, and mood and behavioral changes. Treatment involves an extended period of strict rest. This means time away from work and other life activities. Few of us are in a position to take weeks off work without pay, which is why it is important to make sure you receive compensation for your injuries.
