Cycling can keep you young and even delay the effects of aging, based on the findings of a recent study. The study, published in the journal Aging Cell, compared 125 amateur cyclists between the ages of 55 and 79 with healthy adults who did not exercise on a regular basis. Findings indicate that cyclists maintain strength and muscle mass as they age and keep even levels of cholesterol and body fat. In addition, testosterone levels in men remained high despite increasing age.
Even beyond these benefits, however, the study showed that cycling may boost the immune system. Beginning at the age of 20, the thymus (a gland that makes immune cells) shrinks in size. But cyclists were shown to have the same size thymus, even at a much older age.
We already know that cycling is a great way to reduce the risks of heart disease and cancer, but this study shows that is protects the immune system as we age. Your immune system serves to protect your body from illness and energy. It recognizes your body’s cells and eliminates bacteria, viruses, and parasites. By attacking these body invaders, you are protected from a variety of illnesses.

As we age, our immune systems naturally weaken. That’s one of the reasons that infections usually are more harmful to those of an advanced age. Since their natural immune system is weak, they cannot fight off illness as easily as someone younger. But if the findings of these studies are correct, the impact of cycling can maintain the youthful attributes of a strong immune system. This means less sick days, more energy (as your body is not depleted from illness), and better overall health.
No matter the reason you choose to ride your bike, the benefits are clear! And as we move into the future, it seems likely that scientists will find even more reasons to ride your bike rather than sit in front of the television.
Remember to follow proper safety precautions when cycling, such as wearing a helmet and using reflectors. Failing to do so puts you at risk of injury or death if you are involved in a crash. If you have been injured in a crash, make sure to have an experienced team on your side to help you as you try to recover from your injuries.
