When I ride I am always watching my speed, cadence and heart rate. In fact if I don’t have my Garmin with me (almost never happens), I feel completely lost. Almost, like I am riding blind. There is something about knowing all my riding vitals that creates a certain rhythm for the ride. However, there is a downside, if my Garmin indicates my heart rate is higher than normal, I will get concerned that I am having an off day and this knowledge itself may make my heart beat faster… Now I actually created stress simply by being aware of what my body is doing. I am curious if others feel the same way. Now please understand, this is not enough of a problem to actually ride without my Garmin, that would be like actually eating at a restaurant without checking yelp reviews first, just crazy. Having a Garmin or cycle computer on your bike makes you go faster than you would without it. In fact many times before I ride I intend to take a relaxing spin but once I start seeing low mph numbers, I naturally pick up the pace. It seems that I just naturally want to go faster. It is not so I can get off the bike sooner, though this is a natural consequence. It is simply more fun and exhilaration when you are moving quicker. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy group rides so much.
