There are a lot of painful ways to be dropped. No fun being dropped if you are baby, a cheer leader or a gymnast to name a few… But of course if you are a biker you know what I am talking about. Being dropped on a group bike ride stirs many fears in many bikers. For some it is an embarrassment for others it is perhaps the fear of it being a reflection on your manhood. I recently decided to join a group, I KNEW, I would probably be dropped from. Turns out I was right. I was dropped about 42 miles into a 50 mile ride. Although I was dropped, I learned that the only thing to fear is fear itself. The next time would be an opportunity to go further (42 miles) than the last time. Then perhaps to not getting dropped at all… then to actually taste the air out in front!

That is the great thing about joining groups that may be a little too fast for you; it provides a great way to improve your riding. There is a big difference from being dropped and bonking… I know from firsthand experience. The key is to drop when your fitness level no longer allows you to stay with the group. It is important to always be properly hydrating and providing yourself nutrition during the ride. Otherwise, you can bonk, and without going into the medical definition, let’s just say bonking is not only potentially dangerous for your health it also takes a long time to recover from. Enjoy your rides and be safe!
