If there is a large shoulder on the road, it is usually best to simply ride on the shoulder and allow all the cars to pass you. However, the problem arises when there is a narrow or no shoulder at all. Most inexperienced cyclists will hug the very edge of the right portion of the lane. However, this is very dangerous for two reasons . First, it is easy to essentially be “sucked” in to the curb. Meaning you lose focus for a second and hit the curb, thereby crashing and exposing yourself to being hit by a motor vehicle. Second, many times when you are very far over to the right, you are out of line of site of the motor vehicles. This is dangerous, since if a vehicle does not notice you they may drift over and hit you.

I recommend is actually taking the CENTER of the road way. This way the cars will notice you and you will not be in danger of hitting a curb or having a tire blowout by hitting debris on the side of the road. When there isn’t an adequate shoulder to ride on, you have as much right to the road as the cars and trucks. Sure, some drivers may be angry, but better that you are safe and they are angry!! Let me know your thoughts.
