Bus that is powered by passengers!

I recently saw an article on a vehicle called “ Limo cycle”.  This is essentially a party bus that is powered by its passengers pedaling. It is sort of a cross between a bicycle and a bus.  Truly brilliant, it only moves along at about    5-7  mph, but requires NO power other than its passengers.  It can also carry 5 non pedaling passengers.  This concept is very interesting.  It made me wonder about the concept of an extremely efficient bus that can be completely powered by its passengers.  By pedaling  their energy would be utilized to move the bus as well as charging a battery that would assist when necessary. In this way there would always be an electrical assist if necessary. In addition, the entire top of the bus would be a solar panel that will provide additional electricity.  This would operate similar to a Prius, except one half of the power would be from the passengers, not gasoline.

Obviously, this type of  bus would not be useful for long distances or on highways. However, there is a tremendous amount of traffic and pollution in all the urban cities in America. This bus will not only reduce the pollution, it will increase activity level of its passengers, be safe and silent.  My vision would have room on the bus for those that are not able to pedal as well.

Now I did some rather general Google searches to see if any bus like this has already been developed and I found this  company called “The busycle Project”, which is very similar to my vision.

However, I did stumble upon a bicycle powered school bus which is along the same lines and very cool to boot!  It is used in the Netherlands (of course!). It is made by De Café Racer, and the teachers love it.  It helps the environment and wears out the kids all at the same time!!
