The Race Across America: Some people call it insane, some people call it simply crazy and most people have never heard of it. You might ask yourself, what is it? Well, it is called the Race Across America. Most people are not aware that it even exists and usually only hard-core roadies know about it. I myself only learned about this race through a prior client that was training for it when he had his accident. Essentially this is a non-stop bicycle race from California to Maryland. I repeat: A non-stop bicycle race. There are four classes of racers. There are the soloists that actually do the entire ride themselves and then there are teams of two people, four people, or eight people. It is important to note that even if you are on a team, you are not allowed to draft, so one member of your team must be on the road at all times.
It takes an amazing amount of support, usually up to 19 people for a team or soloist to accomplish his race. So, in fact, this is truly a team sport. Here is a link to get all the details. The solo rider has a maximum of 12 days to finish this race and the teams have a maximum of 10 days to finish the race. The solo rider will only average about two hours of sleep a night. I strongly urge those interested to browse the website for the many fascinating stories behind the riders and teams. For instance, there have been teams that have completed the race with an average age of 70 and even an average age of 80! When you consider the mileage and lack of sleep, the average speed of these riders are truly unbelievable!
As a bicycle injury lawyer, I am always concerned about the safety of bicyclists. In this regard, I am happy to report that the safety record for this race has been nothing short of incredible. Please keep in mind that this has been no accident: the riders are required to have a car behind them preventing any rear-end collisions. As we all do not have this luxury, I would like to remind my fellow readers to utilize a rearview mirror or stay extremely vigilant about oncoming traffic.
