Yesterday was the annual “Ride of Silence” bicycle ride. This is a noncompetitive, slow and silent bicycle ride once a year to pay our respects and remember fellow cyclists who have been killed or severely injured on a bike. It is an extremely important movement, here is a link to the organizing site. It seems to me that we must be thinking about and educating the public about bicycle safety much more than one day a year. It is urgent that drivers of motor vehicles do not just see a bicycle but see a human being.
This annual ride is very important in this sense that it reminds all of us to share the road with bikers. Studies have shown that bikers are much less likely to be hit by motor vehicle being driven by fellow biker. Accordingly, non cyclists must be trained to think like a biker and always be on the lookout for a cyclist. This awareness comes natural to a cyclist but not to a non-cyclist. One of the ways to encourage drivers to be alert for bikers is more roadway signs reminding drivers to look out for bikers. And additional way to reinforce bicycle safety will be for police officers to issue citations for failure to provide 3 feet of room when passing a bicycle in states that passed the 3 feet passing rule (passed in 26 states).
