Obviously, if you are a cyclist you are a person that rides a bicycle. Accordingly, this may seem to be the same thing however I can make a strong argument that it is not. Anybody that rides a bicycle for sport understands there is a significant bias against them. It is important to note that the same person who might enjoy a spirited group ride on a Saturday morning will also take a casual ride on their cruiser with his/her child on the weekends. However many non bikers will group all people that ride a bicycle into one group called cyclists. This creates a bias against anyone who is on a bicycle.
It is more important to think of the bicycle as a means of transportation and vehicle for enjoyment. Nobody labels a person who drives a car as “driver”. They are simply a person who is drives a car. Similarly, some of those people who drive cars own sport cars for pleasure. I believe it is vitally important that the public views people that ride bicycles in the same way as people who drive cars. Once we’re able to get to this point there will be much less friction while sharing the same roads.
Ride. Be Safe. Have Fun.
