Many people view Mexico as a dangerous place with much violence. I do not claim to be an expert on Mexican crime. However, I recently took a family vacation in the Puerto Vallarta region. I found the area extremely friendly and had no feelings of danger. In fact I was fortunate enough to rent a road bike from an outfit call Bici Bucerias, located in Bucerias, Mexico. I went on an amazing 40-mile guided group ride through the country side on low traffic roads. The first thing our guide, Joel, told us was that riding in Mexico is much different than the States. In Mexico, cars RESPECT the right for cyclists to be on the road.

The cars and trucks never buzz by you, they always patiently wait and pass using the oncoming lane. This is because in Mexico many people use bicycles as their only form of transportation and accordingly respect the right and safety of the rider. As more people see bicycles as transportation and not simply recreation, attitudes and behavior will change in the states as well. As a bicycle injury lawyer, I see on a daily basis what happens when motor vehicles do not respect and pay attention to bikers; change can not happen soon enough! Please remind all your non-biker friends and family to keep out an extra eye for cyclists and to always take a second look (in both directions) before turning.
