Is bicycle radar going to realistically make you safer on the road?

Garmin has developed a new product call the backtracker.  It is  essentially a  rear red light  and bicycle radar that warns you of  upcoming cars. There is also a dashboard on your stem that shows you when cars are approaching you. The question is,  does this provide any actual safety benefits to yo?   I would love to believe that we can ride along side 4000+ pound vehicles and be safe. However, common sense tells me that a  large heavy vehicle that has a driver willing to look down at their phone  always puts bikers at risk. With this said there is probably a small incremental benefit from having radar constantly tell you what a car is  approaching.  However, being aware a  motor vehicle  is approaching and avoiding said  vehicle are two separate things. This is why I’ve always promoted the concept of separate infrastructure for bicycles, like they have throughout Europe.  At the end of the day, we need to be away from cars, not with them.  When that happens bike will become the preferable way of traveling. In addition, everybody will be happier, richer and thinner
