Phoenix takes the top spot with 6.12 biker deaths per million city residents, 2009-2011. The rest of the worst is as follows:
2. Mesa, AZ, 6.05 biker deaths per million city residents;
3. Fresno, CA, 5.98 biker deaths per million city residents;
4. Jacksonville, FL, 5.68 biker deaths per million city residents; and
5. New Orleans, 5.54 biker deaths per million city residents.
There is a big drop off for number 6, which is Chicago, there is only 2.22 biker deaths per million city residents, still not a great number, but much improved over the 5 worst cities. This is the latest data I have been able to locate regarding these statistics. Since this time, there has been a tremendous amount of bike share and infrastructure that has been implemented in Chicago. Accordingly, it is likely the current statistics have greatly improved. As dangerous as it is to be a biker in the US, it is much more, to the tune of 7 times more risky to walk! The average pedestrian deaths per million city residents is 15.1!! Of course, most of us walk and most of us don’t bike… so these numbers are not truly reflective of actual safety between walking and riding a bike.

As most of my readers probably know, but it bears repeating. In the Netherlands over half (50%) of the population ride a bike daily AND there is on average only 6 deaths per year. The reason is very simple…. Bikes and Cars don’t have to play together. They have the best biking infrastructure in the world! When we finally realize this in the US everyone will be biking here as well. You’re more likely to die of murder in the US than by cycling in the Netherlands. That pretty much sums it up. So, as usual, use this information to remind you be stay safe when you ride!
Ride. Be Safe. Have Fun.
