Fitbit, Garmin, Apple – no matter the name, fitness watches are synonymous with healthy living. If you are looking for the best cycling watch to track your training, you may be a bit confused by the number of options on the market. Some of these watches are better suited for cyclists than others.
Apple Watch – It’s hard to beat the Apple watch! Unlike most other smart watches that allow you to just receive messages, calls, texts, and social updates, the Apple Watch allows you to respond to them, as well. It allows you to track your ride and the Series 2 and later have built-in GPS tracking (the Series 1 watch tracks by pairing with your iPhone. Even better? There is a Strava app that runs on the Apple watch which allows you to track your workouts and share them with the Strava community. It’s a pricey choice, at $499, but comes with so many features it may be difficult to resist.
Fitbit Ionic – With built-in GPS tracking, the Ionic works well for cyclists who want to keep all their cycling stats, especially if you want to use the pedometer feature, as well. It syncs with Strava and users have reported that reported data is remarkably accurate. One downside – the Fitbit converts increases climbs when cycling into flights of stairs climbed. There are some workarounds, but this can be a hassle if you are trying to track overall fitness. At $299, the Ionic also offers the ability to receive messages and play music, and has a limited selection of apps.

Garmin Forerunner 935 – The latest Forerunner offering, the Garmin Forerunner 935 is a great multi-sport watch that allows you to track cycling, running, swimming, and other activities. Some complain that the watch is unnecessarily complex and difficult to use. At $499, it costs as much as an Apple Watch and although it offers tons of metrics that you can track, you lose a lot of the additional features that come with the Apple watch. For avid athletes, it might be a good choice, but many cyclists will find the smartwatch to be too complex.
Microsoft Band 2 – Many of us were disappointed when the Microsoft Band 3 was cancelled, though there are some indications it is still in the works. Nonetheless, the Microsoft Band 2 has been taken off the Microsoft site. Still, it’s a solid performer and deserves to be included in the list of the best cycling smartwatches. Though some complain that the GPS is not accurate enough and that there is not enough battery life, others feel the Band 2 Is the best choice for an economy band at just $200 (if you can still find one).
