May is National Bike Month and cities and communities across the country are celebrating in a number of ways. These events are held to encourage citizens to ride their bikes more often, and to celebrate this much-loved sport. Even if there is not an event that is local to your area, you can take part in nationwide National Bike Month celebrations!
Nationwide:
Bike to School Day (May 9th): National Bike to School Day originated in 2012 and now 49 states and over 1000 events celebrate this special day. Schools and communities can register their events and share them on the Walk & Bike to School Website. The day encourages children to ride to school and also fosters parent and community participation with numerous bicycle and school-linked events.
National Bike to Work Day (May 18th): The League of American Bicyclists encourages everyone around the country to take part in National Bike to Work Day. This day promotes exercise, eco-friendly alternatives to driving, as well as a way to beat traffic and commutes. Their website reports that 40 percent of trips made are two miles or less, so why not take advantage of your bike, burn a few calories, and save some gas!
National Bike Challenge: From May through September, Love to Ride is sponsoring a National Bike Challenge. You can register on the site to participate and are encouraged to rally your friends to join, as well. Log your bicycle rides throughout the month and participate for prices and bragging rights.
