As an avid biker, I know what it’s like to experience a bike crash. Serious bicycle crashes and collisions can result in broken bones, concussions, and head injuries. But even minor bike accidents can leave you with scrapes and abrasions that need treatment. Medical treatment is expensive, and you can easily wind up with thousands of dollars in unpaid medical bills. We can help!
When your body is injured through a bicycle crash, you may not initially feel much pain. After a bike crash, you will experience a tremendous rush of adrenaline, the “fight or flight” hormone. The adrenaline release can mask pain that would otherwise be overwhelming. In fact, many individuals who have been seriously injured may not immediately feel much pain at all. That’s why it is important to perform a physical assessment for injuries after a crash.
If you have been in a bicycle crash with a car or other vehicle, you should probably receive medical attention, even if you do not feel any significant pain. But what if you have been in a solo crash, caused by a pothole or wet road conditions?
Do you need medical treatment after a bike crash? :
- Are you in any pain? Some minor pain is normal after a crash, but if you are experiencing significant pain, you should seek medical attention promptly after a collision. Also, if you experience any discomfort that does not get better or worsens in the days following a crash, see a physician.
- Check your helmet. Does it show any damage or scrapes in the finish? If so, you should probably be assessed for a concussion. Signs of a concussion include headache, confusion, a lapse of consciousness, nausea and vomiting, or ringing in the ears. Concussions are serious injuries and should always be treated by medical professionals. Sometimes, concussions can be overlooked. Mild concussions do not always involve a lapse in consciousness. Any head injury should be treated by a medical professional.
- Are you bleeding? If you have been in a bike crash, you probably have some scrapes and you may be bleeding. Minor scrapes and abrasions can usually be treated at home, but if you have gravel or road debris deeply embedded in your wounds or if you are experiencing a flow of blood from an injury, seek medical treatment.
- Check your joints. Stretch from side to side, and move your arms, elbows, legs, and knees about. Stiffness, discomfort, or a rubbing or catching sensation can indicate more serious injuries. Sometimes, joint injuries feel worse in the days following a crash.
- Monitor your condition. Even if you do not show any initial signs of concussion, broken bones, or joint injuries from your bicycle accident, you should carefully monitor your condition over the coming hours and days. If you experience any head pain, dizziness, or confusion, seek medical attention.

Even if you initially feel fine, you may be surprised to encounter feelings of pain and stiffness hours or even days after your bicycle accident. Although some stiffness and pain are not uncommon, pain that is intense, unrelenting, or doesn’t let up after taking a mild pain reliever should be assessed.
