According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, riding a motorcycle is 33 times more dangerous than driving a car. Most bikers feel that it’s not a matter of if they will crash, but when. If you ride in a group or like to ride with a buddy, there is a good chance that at some point you will witness a motorcycle crash. This can be a very frightening experience, especially considering one in five bikers will be injured severely in a motorcycle crash. But it’s important to keep your head about you in order to support your friend both in the immediate and long-term aftermath of the crash.

Immediately after a crash, the most important thing to do is to call 911. Once you have notified emergency services personnel and they are on their way, you can attend to your friend and any other crash victims. Often, bikers experience head or neck injures in a crash. Concussions and loss of consciousness are very common. The biker may be unconscious or have an altered state of consciousness. Try to remain calm in order to keep the injured party calm. It’s best not to move the injured person unless they are in a dangerous position. For example, if they are on a highway with trucks whizzing past and they are able to walk, move them to the side of the road.

If there are any witnesses who have stopped, try to get them to remain at the scene of the crash until they have given a statement to police. If they insist that they must leave, be sure to get their name and phone number so they can be contacted later. Their account of the crash may be vital in helping your friend get compensation for their injuries. In addition, if you are able, take photographs of the scene of the crash. Try to get photographs that show the entire scene as well as close-ups. It can be important to photograph areas of the vehicle or motorcycle that show contact through scrapes and paint transfer.

Once emergency personnel arrive, you can help by giving a statement to the police. Provide a clear description of what happened, from your perspective. Try to remain calm and do your best to recall as many details as possible. In many cases, you will be able to accompany your friend to the hospital. You may be able to ride behind the ambulance. If the biker insists that they are not injured, do your best to encourage them to seek medical treatment anyway. Injuries are extremely common in motorcycle crashes, and sometimes the initial pain is masked by the release of adrenaline that occurs during the crash.
