A dirt bike is a type of motorcycle that is created to traverse rough, uneven terrain. Whether you ride on a dirt bike track or take off through the woods, you’re going to tackle bumps and humps, and lots of dirt and mud along the way. Even though dirt bikes are two-wheeled, motorized vehicles, their purpose and design sets them apart from motorcycles. They are designed for off-road use and do not meet the requirements set by the Department of Motor Vehicles for lawful use on the roads.
Dirt bikes are crafted to be lightweight and compact. One of the lightest dirt bikes, the FX Mountain Moto, is just 125 pounds in weight. With a design that seems to incorporate elements from both mountain bikes and motorcycles, the FX Mountain Moto and related Mountain Moto FX5 easily tackle obstacles like logs and brush, and allow you to explore new territory.
Although less expensive than most motorcycles, these dirt bikes come in at around $5000 – still fairly expensive for something you plan to use and abuse. Keep in mind, however, the premium dirt bikes can be priced as high as $10,000!
At the other end of the pricing spectrum, the Razor MX650 Rocket Off-Road Racer performs well for its price point of less than $500. And yes, you read right: this dirt bike is fully electric.

It can ride for about 10 miles on a charge, but after that it will need to be connected to the electric again to recharge its battery. This translates to about 40 minutes of ride time, which might not be enough for some riders. But for an entry level bike that won’t cost too much, it’s not a bad find.
If you’re looking for a solid dirt bike but you are either new to the sport or you just don’t want to shell out the big bucks, look towards the used market. Dirt bikes are often sold in good to excellent condition for half the retail price (or even less).
These bikes have the kinks worked out, and if you purchase from a reputable owner, you may even get a few good tips and history about your bike. Don’t be afraid to try out a few dirt bikes before you make your purchase though, as you will find that each bike has a unique feel.
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that dirt bikes are safer than motorcycles. Dirt bike accidents and dirt bike injuries are on the ride, and well over 100,000 people are injured each year. Seventy-five percent of those injuries require hospitalization, and some dirt bike injuries can result in long-term disability.
Common injuries include fractures, burns, concussions, abrasions, and internal injuries. Although we believe that all dirt bike riders should wear helmets, it is a legal requirement in many states.
