North Carolina Legislators Sneak Anti-Abortion Regulations in to Motorcycle Safety Bill

Conservative lawmakers in North Carolina, after already attempting to slip anti-abortion regulations into a bill combating “Sharia Law,” have again tried to sneak similar regulations into a bill that was initially focused on motorcycle safety. And they did so at nearly the last possible minute, with many legislators learning of the regulations a mere three minutes before its official proposal. Democratic representatives had no forewarning that this so-called motorcycle safety bill included measures that would restrict the availability of abortion clinics and make it immensely harder for women to legally get one. Many are calling this new Tea-Party backed movement a war on women’s rights. And they’re right. And, naturally, now it’s related to motorcycles.

The way these lawmakers tried to sneakily pass legislation on such a controversial topic is infuriating. And worse, it has become a disturbing trend, employed most notably in these recent abortion legislations, and has been propagated partly due to influential conservative lobby groups. In short, they are trying to trick the opposition into support of a bill they would never consider, let alone sign. It also ruins the proposition of a bill that before had general support, and in this case, one that would provide further legal protection to motorcyclists.

Some Democratic lawmakers only found out about the added abortion clauses because an inside reporter had found out and tweeted about it. Rightfully, these steps meant to minimize media coverage and popular outcry couldn’t escape the Twitter-sphere. It is a despicable way to govern, and by even attempting it, they are acknowledging how powerful and legitimate the national opposition is.

But I guess it takes immoral action to force morality on others. That’s always been the case right? A cruel paradox, but these deluded lawmakers are being righteous in their un-righteous governing. Or is it un-righteous in their righteous governing? Either way, the hypocrisy abounds, in ideology and practice, and perfectly demonstrates why women should have the right to choose. If a small number of conservative, Christian lawmakers can choose to impact the lives and freedom of half the living population by morally questionable means, why can’t half the living population choose to impact the lives of their own, far fewer, unborn, as morally questionable as some hypocritical legislators may see it? And what about the motorcycle safety measures?

Now I am in quite the conundrum because I want to see these motorcycle measures passed, but I’m staunchly against anything anti-abortion. It’s funny that elected government officials now have to choose between denying motorcyclists much needed legal protection and endorsing abortion. And now the two are mutually exclusive and will be forever related. As they should be… It doesn’t seem to make much sense, but maybe I just need an explanation. Please help me out. The legal connection between motorcycles and abortion? I know, it’s a tough one.
