Just in case your love of freedom, the outdoors, and a powerful engine wasn’t enough, studies show that riding motorcycles improves cognitive functioning. A small study conducted by Ryuta Kawashima (the creator of Nintendo’s “Brain Age”) found that cognitive functioning increases by up to 50 percent just by riding a motorcycle daily for a couple of months.
In his study, Kawashima separated a group of 22 motorcycle riders (who had not ridden for a while) into two groups. One group were ordered to ride their motorcycle daily for two months, while the other group were ordered to avoid riding for two months. At the end of the study, the group that had been riding performed 50 percent better on a cognitive functioning test. The group that had abstained from riding actually experienced slightly diminished levels in their cognitive functioning.

Although this study is limited in scope, it certainly seems to indicate that riding a motorcycle can result in greater brain power- but why? Kawashima believes that the riders brains are routinely activated while on the road. The increased level of consciousness and awareness results in greater focus and stronger brain power- even after the rides are over. He also noted that the group that had ridden daily reported greater levels of happiness and also made less careless errors.
Alzheimers, dementia, and the slowing of mental functioning with age are all major issues in healthcare today. Although it remains to be seen if a simple motorcycle ride a day would keep the inevitable aging of the brain at bay, Kawashima’s results seem to indicate the need for further studies in this area.
