Did you know motorcycles can help deliver health care and prevent people from dying do to lack of access to health care and other vital services just because they live in remote or isolated places. RIDERS.org is an organization that is working on a project to make sure that all health workers in Africa have access to reliable transportation so they can reach the most isolated people with regular and predictable health care. RIDERS has an amazing website. I particularly like the “wheel of help” they offer to show how the entire cycle works. It starts with the problem. That some communities are a several hour walk, in harsh terrain from available health care. RIDERS then provide health care workers with motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles. RIDERS also trains the health workers to carry out daily maintenance on the vehicles. Technicians service the vehicles once per month so they never break down. With the improved reliability of health care services, the entire health care system is strengthened. People’s faith in the health care system improves and this leads to healthier and happier communities. Best of all, epidemics, such as malaria, HIV, TB and other diseases are drastically improved. Who knew motorcycles could do all this?
