Sydney has over 4000 motorcycles traversing the central business district every day. With congestion a huge problem, some thoughtful lawmakers have looked to motorcycle traffic to help stem the tie-ups. New South Wales has passed Australia’s first “lane filtering” legislation. “Lane filtering” is Australian for “lane splitting”. Motorcycles can now share a lane, ride between lanes and go around stalled or slow cars in the same lane. The next challenge is teaching auto drivers to check for motorcycles while changing lanes. Also police to figure out exactly what and how they will enforce the new laws. Expectations are that other Australian states will soon adopt similar laws.
This guy is giving it a try. As you can see, there are still some kinks to work out.
