BMW of North America has recalled 29,281 motorcycles due to an equipment issue. The bikes affected include certain 2013-2017 F800R, F800GT, and R1200GS models, 2014-2017 R1200GS Adventure models, 2016-2017 S1000XR models and 2015-2017 R1200R and R1200S models. When these bikes are fitted with the optional luggage cases, the rear reflectors may be blocked. These motorcycles do not comply with the standards of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108 regarding lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
This defect could potentially increase the risk of a crash. BMW is in the process of notifying owners, and dealers will repair the issue, free of charge. Dealers will install reflectors on the cases or case mounts. The recall, announced on July 28, 2017 will formally begin on September 21, 2017. Owners seeking more information on the recall can contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.
Anyone concerned with this or any other motorcycle recall can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline. Their phone number is 1-888-327-4236. For more information, visit www.safercar.gov.
