We all love to ride on a bright, sunny day, but many bikers stay indoors when it rains. Not only is riding in the rain well… wet, but it also comes with hazards including increased braking distance and slick roads. Fortunately, there are some tips and techniques that make riding in the rain feasible for even the most timid rider.
Tips for Riding a Motorcycle In the Rain
- Be aware of reduced traction! Braking will require extra distance, so leave ample space between yourself and others on the road.
- Road surfaces are slick. Try to avoid grates and concrete, which may be even more slick in rainy weather conditions. Also keep in mind that the roads will be the most slippery right after the rain begins, when oils on the road surface combine with water. Be aware!
- Use anti-fog treatments on your helmet. These treatments can be a blessing in bad weather. If your helmet begins to fog, stop and clear it before continuing on.
- Do not be afraid to pull over. There’s nothing wrong with pulling off the road, under a bridge, or even taking a break at a nearby restaurant. If road conditions are too dangerous, be cautious and wait out the rainy weather.
- Look far ahead for hazards. Since roadways are slick, it is essential that you respond to hazards as early on as possible. In downpours, drivers often ride their brakes and slow down. Watch carefully for drivers and other road hazards so that you can respond appropriately.
- No sudden movements! Accidents can occur when bikers suddenly veer, brake, or swerve in the rain. Move slowly enough so that you do not need to make any sudden movements.
