But remember it just takes one shifty character to take your precious bike from you, never to be seen again. I’m always amazed by the motorcycles I see sitting around with (seemingly) no security- even with the keys in them. This is like asking for your bike to be stolen!
If you are concerned about motorcycle security, follow this checklist. By taking the steps outlined below, you will know you have done all you can to keep your motorcycle safe.
1. Out of sight, out of mind. If your motorcycle is sitting in your driveway, or in crowded parking lot, right out in the view of others, it’s going to get attention. Maybe you like knowing that others ogle your bike from afar. Admiration is great- but keeping your bike out in the open means that people with nefarious thoughts will see it, too. Instead, either park your motorcycle in a garage or keep it covered. If you must park it out in the open, try to find a spot that is not likely to attract attention from unwanted eyes (more on that below).
2. Keep it bright. If you must park your bike outside, find a location that is well-lit. Try to avoid darkened areas of parking lots or side streets, which could allow criminals time to mess with your bike without attracting attention.
3. Vary your routine. If you park your motorcycle in the same spot each day while you work, try to change up your routine. Professional thieves love to learn your schedule so that they know when your motorcycle will be unattended. Change up your parking areas regularly.
4. Record your key numbers. Record your key numbers in a safe spot and keep with your important papers. Then, file the key numbers off of your key. With the key numbers, a criminal can have a key made for your motorcycle.

5. Lock it up. Even the most secure locks on the market will not be enough to stop all criminals, but they can serve as a strong deterrent, and at the very least, slow them down. Don’t place locks near the ground as someone can then gain leverage which will help break the lock. Secure your motorcycle to an immobile object.
6. Make it loud. Although it is true that people often ignore car alarms, these loud sirens still attract attention. 110 dB is enough to attract annoyed stares, if nothing else.
7. Get a remote shut-off. These systems are great, and not terribly expensive. They notify you if your motorcycle is moved or tipped, and allow you to shut off the engine even if you are away from the bike. This is a great option as it’s not as obtrusive as an alarm, but still provides good protection.
8. Opt for pricier protection. In the world of motorcycle protection, you get what you pay for, so don’t cheap out. Read reviews to learn about the top performing motorcycle locks and choose wisely based on performance- not on your wallet.
