Perhaps you have been wanting one your whole life, or maybe it’s a new desire, but if you want to ride you first need to convince the wife or girlfriend it’s a good idea. This blog offers the (almost) foolproof way to help the lady in your life agree to your motorcycle purchase.
First, you must think about your lady’s desires. She loves you and does not want to see you hurt. She does not want to worry about you while you are on the road, and she probably isn’t thrilled at the idea of you spending many thousands of dollars on a bike. Finally, she may envision you buying a bike and spending less time with her. To help her see the benefits of you owning a bike, you first must address her concerns.
Tips to Convince Your Wife or Girlfriend You Need a Motorcycle
- Money – Money, money, money makes the world go round. And unless you are independently wealthy, a motorcycle and gear is going to be a hefty expense. Before you even think about approaching her with the idea of owning a bike, you should save up. Sure, you could finance it, but it’s best to show her that you are serious and committed to this idea. Perhaps you have a few things laying around that you can sell. Maybe you have a tax refund, or can save money from each paycheck. Whatever you do, make sure you have saved some cash before you talk to your lady.
- Safety – Riding motorcycles can be dangerous. That is why it is important to purchase good, quality gear and take a safety course. Do some research on the best gear to keep you safe if you are in a motorcycle crash. Find out which helmets are best, and go to the bike shop and try some. Remember to add this gear to your budget, as well. Never, ever go cheap when it comes to gear. Remember- your gear is the only thing protecting you in the event of a crash. Also, do your homework. There are plenty of articles that explain how riding a motorcycle offers some degree of protection and safety, since bikers can maneuver in and around traffic easily. Locate an upcoming motorcycle safety course. Again, add this to your budget and your calendar.
- Time – No one is going to think you getting a bike is a good idea if it means you are never home with your lady. You can approach this one in a couple of different ways. If your lady is social and likes to party, consider learning more about local bicycle clubs. They often have events for couples and families, and she might be interested in going with you. Keep in mind, if you want her to embrace your hobby, you must embrace hers. Does she love shopping? You may need to go with her to the mall, and even give your opinion on the clothes she tries on. Spend quality time with your wife or girlfriend. This means putting the cell phone away, turning off the television, and staring deep into her eyes while you hear about her day. Okay- maybe not that bad, but be sure to attend to her and focus on her during conversations.
- The Conversation – After you have done all of these things, it’s time for the conversation to occur. Remember to remain calm, even if she initially objects to the idea. Explain to her the reasons you want a bike. Now is the time to show her the money you have saved, the gear and classes you have learned about, and your plan to either incorporate her in motorcycling activities or spend time with her away from your bike. Remember that it may take her some time to agree with you. One suggestion is to visit your local motorcycle dealership. There’s something about the shine of a bunch of new bikes that wins over many a non-bike lover.
No matter what, it’s important to realize that she has valid concerns, too. Be sure to hear her out and listen to her concerns. Maybe you agree with them, maybe not, but regardless she has a right to feel the way she feels. Hopefully these tips are just what it takes to convince your lady that you need a bike!
