Electric Motorbikes and Climate Change

I just stumbled on these folding electric motorbikes, the Electric R70 Di Blasi Motorbike, and they got me thinking about the ever-growing problem of climate change. The bikes themselves are cool, convenient, and probably would make a good deal of sense for all small, local trips. But they are also a sign of the sort of things that will hopefully become more popular and widespread in the coming years. With the Green Movement starting to take a more forceful hold on our country’s general attitude, it’s important that everyone keeps in mind that every electronic device, and even more so, every fuel powered vehicle, contributes to the deterioration of the world around us. Especially as these small, daily uses are spread across 300 million people and growing. It may seem obvious, but with more and more people coming into the world, and with the world becoming much more dependent on pollution producing technology, we need a concerted effort to be made right now, by everyone, to curb the effects or the climate will soon be beyond repair. So we need to start accepting non-carbon based, energy-saving technologies like this motorbike, even if it seems stupid or dorky. The fact is it’s practical and could help save what will soon be our children’s planet.

And, trust me, I know that each individual’s contribution to the movement will not have a great impact, and even a fairly large group won’t have that great an impact. And while it’s not all or none, because every bit still does help, it is the job of the government to implement restrictions on the power plants and producers that do contribute the large portions of pollution. The Obama Administration is finally starting to tackle the issue of climate change head-on, as opposed to the vague notions he touched on in his first term. And while many people, including other countries’ leaders, felt the speech didn’t spell out the tangible steps that will be taken well enough, or forcefully enough, his plans will make a significant difference. And hopefully in the very near future. But it’s still everybody’s responsibility to do their part. I get upset that some people still won’t accept climate change’s reality or the things that need to be done to combat it, because there aren’t larger stakes than the entire earth. As President Obama put it, “We don’t have time for a meeting of the Flat Earth society.” I know I will continue to embrace more efficient technologies, like this dinky motorbike, because it’s what’s necessary.
