In April 2013, California police, in what is now an April tradition, will be cracking down on drivers who unlawfully talk on their cell phone and/or text while driving. The numbers are astounding. In 2012, police issued 425,041 tickets for talking on handheld phones – something that has been outlawed in California for many years. Police also issued 21,059 tickets for texting while driving.
The number of texting tickets is misleading because it’s much harder to spot someone who is texting while driving than it is to spot someone using a handheld cell phone. The number of people actually texting while driving is likely astronomical.
Why is this important to the motorcycle riding community? In 2011, 3,331 people were killed and 400,000 injured in crashes caused by distracted driving. A significant number of those victims were motorcycle riders. Motorcycle riders beware! Automobile drivers are distracted. They are not looking out for other cars let alone motorcycle riders.

Motorcycle accident lawyer Joe Moses, of Kass & Moses, recently commented on the story, offering advice to motorcycle riders. According to Moses, “These statistics remind us why bikers are in danger every time they get on their bikes. The general public is not watching out for motorcyclists. That makes it all the more important for motorcycle riders to ride with caution. I submitted a paper on this very topic to the 2012 International Motorcycle Show”
Moses went on to say, “In addition, it’s important for motorcycle riders to have the right motorcycle insurance. If you get on your bike this spring without adequate limits of uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance, you’re taking an unnecessary risk. If you want advice about what type of insurance you should have, call the motorcycle accidents lawyers at our firm.”
