There is a seven letter word that causes the most obvious issue between Vegans and the Motorcycle lifestyle. LEATHER. On a more positive note, animal rights groups in Washington D.C. sponsored a ride with the Peacekeepers Motorcycle Club along with the Mayor of Baltimore in 2011. I wasn’t able to find out how they addressed the leather issue at that ride, but this picture seems to show prominent leather.

But for those of you that love animals, eat vegan or like me, love someone who does, there are options. The Vegan Motorcyclist (Fueled by Gasoline, Powered by Tofu) gives us a complete Gear Guide. There are non-leather options for Helmets, Gloves, Boots, Jackets, Pants, Chaps and Armor. They look awesome, they last, and most importantly, they still protect you. I have been practicing motorcycle law for a long time. I have seen a lot of accidents. I have seen people go down in flip flops and shorts and I have seen road rash be avoided by full leather gear. I don’t plan on testing it on the pavement myself, but I believe these non-leather options will keep you road-rash free if you should go down. For now, keep the rubber side down!
