Giving birth in poor parts of Africa is done at great risk to mother and child. Guinea, a former French colony in West Africa has great natural resources and by all rights should not be a poor country. Bauxite and Gold are plentiful. It can produce great amounts of hydroelectric power and has oil reserves off the Atlantic coast. However France, Russia, and now China have continually exploited these natural recourses for their own gain. Internal corruption enriches a small few and the 10 million people who live in Guinea struggle to get by.
As a result, infrastructure is lacking throughout the country, particularly in remote villages. They don’t have proper roads that can be accessed by cars or trucks. This of course makes the delivery of healthcare that much more difficult.

To address these problems, UNICEF, together with a mutual health insurance organization named MURIGA deliver maternal health programs in part by using motorcycle ambulances. Currently the motorcycle ambulances do not reach all remote villages but because of its great success, UNICEF is working to extend the reach of the motorcycle ambulances to all of the remote areas in the country.
