The Sturgis rally originated in the sleepy town of Sturgis, South Dakota in 1938 when the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club held a number of motorcycle races. Remember what I said about the whole town coming alive for this annual event? Well, that includes local police. It’s as if the entire state of South Dakota’s police forces descend on the event. Okay, maybe not literally, but it’s not unusual to see numerous police officers parked along the perimeter of the town. They watch closely for speeding and drunk drivers, and fines can be hefty! And besides- who wants to have to come back to South Dakota to deal with a potential hearing for a big ticket? Avoid speeding! It’s not worth it!
Appreciate the Bikes
There are so many bikes to be seen- from classics to state of the art bikes and way too many custom bikes to begin to take them all in. Bring your bike and prepare to take notice of the many thousands of others that you see. Throw your brand loyalty out the window. Sturgis is a rally for overall motorcycle love- and they don’t segregate. Instead, appreciate the roar and power of the bikes and the bikers who ride them.

Sturgis can get expensive. Although you can opt to be economical, you will quickly find that most things cost a lot of money. Most bars have a hefty cover charge, and the cost of your drinks will quickly add up. Remember that many of these locations are only open for a couple of weeks a year, so they rely on your deep pockets to get them through the other 11 lean months. Avoid the Traffic
A lot of people refer to Sturgis as one big traffic jam, and with so many people invading a small town, it’s easy to see why. If you plan to ride through the city at peak hours, you’re going to hit some nasty traffic. Of course, every traffic jam is an opportunity to appreciate other bikes. To avoid the traffic, or at least minimize it somewhat, ride in at odd times. Come into town in the early part of the day, when many other bikers are still sleeping off their hangovers. Or, spend the day riding the beautiful curves and hills of South Dakota and hit the town as everyone is breaking for dinner before the bars fill up.
Take Lots of Pictures
You’re going to see incredible bikes, beautiful women, and some of the best bands in the country. Bring a camera or take lots of pictures on your phone. It’s great to relive your time at Sturgis when you return home – and a lot of fun to show off the rally to all your riding partners at home.
