Motorcycle jackets are as unique as bikers – each with different features that set them apart from the rest. In fact, buying a jacket can be almost as complicated (and not quite as enjoyable) as buying a bike. With so many options, it is easy to get lost in the mix. It’s tough to know which features are critical and which are just bells and whistles.
5 Must-Have Motorcycle Jacket Qualities
- Rugged materials – Your jacket is going to endure a beating. From wind and weather to bugs and road debris, your jacket must be able to protect you from the elements. Leather is the traditional choice, but new synthetic fabrics offer a lightweight and breathable option that is just as durable. Your jacket should be warm and waterproof as well as able to protect you from the hazards you face as you ride the roadways. Check out a variety of materials and consider how well they will endure the beating they will inevitably take.
- Good ventilation – On a cool, crisp morning, ventilation options will be the last thing on your mind as you are warm and cozy in you jacket. But when the sun starts to beat down and you feel yourself begin to perspire, you will be begging for ventilation. Many jackets have zip closure vents to allow for good ventilation. Other jackets have liners that can be removed to allow for better ventilation.
- Impact protection – Removable impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows, and back transform your jacket from mere weatherproofing to a piece of protective gear. It is important to remember that these are just one layer of protection and should not be considered your sole protective gear. But if you lay your bike down or are involved in a crash, you will likely be thankful you have them.
- Pockets, both zipped and open – A good jacket can never have enough pockets. Interior chest pockets are excellent because they are usually larger and, since they are located inside the jacket, provide a safer place to keep money, your cell phone, and anything else you want to protect. Exterior pockets are essential as well, for those things you want to access quickly. Zipped pockets provide extra protection. I cannot tell you how many items I have lost going down the road because I failed to use my zipped pockets.
- Visibility – Your jacket represents an additional way to keep you visible on the roads. Many jackets now have built-in reflectors, either as reflective shapes and strips or reflective piping. Other jackets are extremely bright and can easily catch the eye of those on the road around you.
