Motorcycle crashes happen every day – and any seasoned EMT has seen his or her share of motorcycle accident injuries. They speed along the highways, responding to calls, and providing emergency assistance to people in need. We all know that riding a motorcycle can be high risk, and even if you are safe an accident can occur anytime. Often the first to the scene of these crashes, here is what EMT’s wish you knew.
1. Start at the top, with your head. Was your helmet damaged or crashed? Do you have a headache or confusion? Did you experience a lapse in consciousness? Do you feel woozy and dizzy when you try to walk? If any of these have occurred, you need to get emergency assistance immediately. Head injuries, whether mild concussions or brain bleeds, require prompt treatment. It is often impossible to determine how severe a head injury is without a medical evaluation. Never neglect a head injury.

2. Are you bleeding? After a motorcycle crash, road rash is common. But there is a difference between abrasions of the skin and frank bleeding. Small areas of road rash are less concerning than larger, deeper areas. Apply pressure to any wounds and call for emergency assistance if they are significant in size.
3. Remain still and calm. Now is not the time to worry about the condition of your motorcycle. If you have any indications of back or neck injuries, or major damage to your extremities, it is best to sit still and await help. Moving too much can worsen your injuries.
4. Keep your contact information easily accessible. If you are unconscious or have died in a crash, you want EMT’s or police to be able to easily identify you and contact your family. Although it is difficult to imagine such a scenario, you do not want to have your spouse or children find out that you have died because they see the crash on television.

5. If you are planning an extended ride, let someone know where you will be. Many bikers love to explore unknown areas and check out back roads. There is nothing wrong with an adventure in the countryside. Just be sure to let someone know where you will be. If a crash does happen, or you break down, you want someone to look for you.

6. Ride safely and defensively, always. EMTs see their fair share of injured bikers. Sadly, sometimes these crashes could have been avoided. Although EMTs are always happy to respond to accidents and help with injuries, they would prefer that you avoid being hurt. You can often do so by riding defensively and carefully.
Remember to carry a first aid kit. Although emergency services can arrive quickly, you can treat minor injuries. A properly equipped first aid kit will also give you ample gauze and bandages to treat bleeding wounds on an injured rider.
Finally, wear appropriate protective gear. Far too many bikers are injured as they skid and slide across the asphalt. Road rash is no laughing matter. It is painful and can result in extensive scarring. Never ride without appropriate gear.
