Fall is upon us – already! It’s been a beautiful motorcycle season so far, but it’s not over yet. Despite the chilly days that fall brings, there is still plenty of time to enjoy your bike.
- Watch out for crossing animals. You are statistically most likely to strike an animal on the roadway during September through November. Deer are more active during the fall, and a crash on a bike will really put you (and the deer) out of commission. Scan the sides of the roadway ahead of you, especially during dusk and dawn hours when animals are more active. Your headlights will reflect off the eyes of animals, so if you see any glowing, slow down and ride with extra caution.
- Dress in layers. Fall days are notoriously unpredictable. Some days are downright brisk, while others are as warm as summer. The best way to handle unpredictable weather is to wear layers. Start with a base layer of an undershirt, then your regular shirt, and a sweatshirt and jacket. Seem excessive? You can easily take layers off to be more comfortable if you start to get warm. This way you’ll be sure to be comfortable no matter the weather conditions.
- Careful of leaves on the roadway. Fall brings lots and LOTS of leaves. These leaves and other tree debris can sometimes accumulate on the roadways, especially on back roads. Ride with caution, and remember that you will need extra braking distance. Check your brakes and tires before riding, too! Wet leaves can be incredibly slick, so try to avoid them as much as possible.
- Jack Frost may strike when you least expect it. Be aware that crisp fall nights and early mornings may mean frost on the roads. Shady areas and overpasses are more likely to ice up, so use extra caution.
- Check your tires. If you have been riding all summer, your tread may be wearing a bit thin. It’s always wise to give your tires a good once-over periodically to look for excess wear. Remember to check and make sure your tires are properly inflated, as well.
- Look for local motorcycle events. There are some great rides and motorcycles rallies during the early fall. Check with your local clubs and organizations to find about rallies in your area. Local motorcycle dealers are also a wealth of information in this regard.
- Prepare for the winter. It won’t be long before the frigid days of winter strike – for most of the country, that is. If you put your bike away for the winter, make sure you are prepared. Do you need to get a new cover? Any new supplies to prep for the winter? Do it now so you will be ready.
- Invest in heated gear. I swear, there is nothing worse than riding with cold hands. Fortunately, there are some fantastic heated and grips and seats that will keep you warm on fall’s chilly days. These relatively inexpensive adjustments will make your fall rides much more enjoyable.
