As motorcycle accident attorneys, we feel it is important to present this list of road hazards to help bikers stay vigilant. Motorcycles give us a feeling of freedom and a rush of exhilaration, but bikers
must stay cautious and aware of road hazards. Road hazards can lead to injuries or even accidents. Fortunately, most hazards can be avoided by exercising proper precautions.
- Debris, gravel, and oil on the roadway. Areas of sand, gravel, dirt, and oil in the roadway can cause you to lose traction. If possible, avoid these hazards completely, but if you must ride over them, do so slowly and cautiously. Brake gradually, as applying your brakes too hard will further hinder your stability.
- Blind spots. Remember that your profile is small and be cautious to avoid riding in driver’s blind spots. As a biker, it is important to maintain a cushion around you, so speed up or slow down, as needed.
- Potholes and uneven roads. These dreaded road surfaces can cause you to lose stability. When possible, avoid uneven surfaces, even if this means moving to the far side of the lane. Be cautious and look ahead for potholes. Potholes and other areas of disrepair can easily lead to accidents.
- Standing water and large puddles. Areas of water in the roadway can lead to hydroplaning and a frightening loss of stability. Avoid these areas or ride through slowly to maintain control.
- Slick roadways. Especially after a long dry spell, rain can make roadways particularly slick. Cars leak oil which dries on the roadways. When the rain wets the roads, this oil creates a slick surface that can feel like driving on ice. Exercise extra caution or avoid going out during these times altogether.
With proper precaution, many hazards can be avoided. We recommend that all motorcyclists and drivers use extra vigilance when driving.
