Preparing Your Motorcycle for Winter: All the Essentials

As much as I hate to admit it, the crisp autumn days mean that winter is just around the corner. Soon all but the most diehard (and the Floridians) will have to retire their bikes for the season. Rather than just rolling it into the garage and hoping for the best, take the time to properly prepare the bike for the months in captivity.

Preparing your motorcycle for winter:

1. Fill up all your fluids. This includes gasoline, antifreeze, coolant, and lube. Remember to check the antifreeze once the temperature plummets to ensure it’s working properly. Also, coat the engine with oil before winter storage to prevent rusting. Rather than take the change of your oil becoming acidic while in storage, change your oil and filter. Remember to add a fuel stabilizer to prevent gas tank rusting. Finally, be sure you lube your bike thoroughly to prevent rusting and repel moisture.
2. Prep your battery. Batteries lose their charge over time, so hook it up to a battery charger. Don’t forget to use a battery tender so as not to overcharge. Also, clean your posts if they are corroded.
3. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Inflate them just below manufacturer guidelines, and rest them on a stand. Tires that remain flat on the ground over the winter may form flat spots. If you do not use a stand, rotate the tires regularly and place them on a carpet or cloths to reduce moisture buildup.
4. A few more things: Use an exhaust plug – that open exhaust may appear tempting to mice and other small rodents who want to build a home. Invest in a cover that will protect your bike from the elements, dust, and other debris. It’s best to keep the bike indoors, especially during the winter months. If you do not have a garage, consider using a rental unit to house your bike.

The extra time you spend prepping your bike now will save you hours in the spring when you are eager to ride. It could also save you hundreds of dollars in repair costs. As hard as it is to retire it for another season, remember that the warmth of spring will be upon us before you know it. Imagine how great it will be to uncover your bike and find it ready to go!
