As the crisp, cool chill of Fall begins and the dog days of Summer are finally behind us, it’s time to relish those last few weeks of riding. Adhere to the following tips to ride safely throughout the cooler days ahead.
Tips for Motorcycling in the Fall
- Deer season is upon us! As hunters take to the woods and seek their kill, deer become more abundant on the roads. Pay special attention during dawn and dusk, and be aware when riding near open areas surrounding woods where deer may seek refuge. Wear ample protective gear and try to keep ample space around your bike to maneuver should you see a deer in your vicinity.
- Cool nights quickly give away to frost and icy surfaces. Pay particular attention when riding in shady areas and during early morning and late night hours. Braking time increases considerably in icy conditions, and slick roadways make curves more difficult to navigate.
- Wear warm clothing. Yes, it should go without saying, but you’d be surprised the number of people who dress for the warm weather of the afternoon and then find themselves cussing as the temperature drops 20 degrees. Fall evenings can be chilly, and it’s better to be prepared. Dress in layers and be sure to bring a jacket with you. But remember, bulkier clothing can make rapid movements difficult. Thermal underwear, which provides warmth through just a thin layer of clothing, is essential for chilly days.
- Leaves create slick surfaces. The most beautiful part of Fall can also be the most dangerous. Leaves on the surface of the roadway can be slick. The quickly obscure your ability to search for potholes and other surface issues on the roadway. In addition, they can become especially slippery when rain begins to fall. Although there is no way to avoid this hazard, try to steer clear of any areas of heavy leaf covering, and ride on roads you know well. Now is not the time to try out the scenic route, as tempting as that may be.
- Shorter days can leave you riding in the dark. For some bikers, this is no problem. But for those who normally stick to daylight hours, this can cause a bit of trouble. Remember to wear reflective gear and check your lights to ensure that they are clean and functioning properly.
- There are fewer riders on the roadway. Motorists are less aware of motorcyclists during the Fall months, when they don’t expect to see them. Stay extra alert of the cars around you and wear bright, reflective clothing. Do all that you can to make sure that motorists know you are on the road.
The Fall months can make for beautiful rides, as you hit the road and enjoy nature’s bounty. But don’t let your guard down while you are riding. Stop, take the time to enjoy the scenery, and then ride on. Try to concentrate on the road and any potential hazards while you ride, and enjoy the beauty around you only after you stop.
