Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the name given to head trauma that results in injury to the brain, ranging from mild to severe. Mild TBI may result in a very brief loss of consciousness or state of confusion after an accident, often followed by a short period (days to weeks) of headaches, slower processing, and minor cognitive difficulties. Severe TBI, on the other hand, can result in an extended loss of consciousness and cognitive and physical delays that may be permanent and require ongoing therapy.
Most motorcycle riders know that wearing a helmet provides some degree of protection in the event of a motorcycle crash. But no matter how well-tested and secure the helmet, none can provide complete protection in the event of an accident. It is essential that all riders know the signs of TBI so they can recognize it in themselves and others. Signs of TBI include:
- Loss of consciousness
- Confusion
- Loss of memory, either temporary or prolonged
- Loss of cognitive abilities
- Headaches
- Visual disturbances

If someone in a motorcycle accident experiences any of these symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately. Often, concussions (mild TBI) can be treated with rest alone. More significant TBI, however, may require medical treatment and/or ongoing therapy. The effects of moderate to severe TBI may last a lifetime.
The financial costs of traumatic brain injury can be overwhelming. Medical costs, of course, are initially quite high, but often the most significant costs are represented by the loss of income. Some individuals may find that they can no longer return to their previous work.
