Think about this statistic for a second, only 10% of bicycle accidents involve a collision with a car. However almost 50% of the time a cyclist has a collision with a car it happens at intersection. This is one of the most vulnerable, exposed parts of your ride. it is very important to follow all the rules of the road. As in most states a cyclist is considered a vehicle and must follow the same rules of the road as all motor vehicles. In addition, police officers often unfairly blame cyclists for accident. To combat this bias it is critical that you follow all the rules of the road. Here are some tips that I use when I ride to stay safe. One, Make sure that you have lights on the front and back of your bike and are wearing high visibility clothing. Two, regardless of who has the right-of-way always allow a motor vehicle to proceed first, if there is any doubt. Three, assume you are invisible to all motor vehicles, I repeat assume you are invisible to all motor vehicles. Lastly, if you are riding against the traffic on a sidewalk or bike path be even more careful at intersections, As cars will not anticipate you being there.
Ultimately, we must change the infrastructure of how intersections are set up to better protect the cyclist. Here is a great article on how this should be done.
Ride. Be Safe. Have Fun.
