Top 10 Things To Do If You Are in a Motorcycle Accident

POSTED BY Andrew Kass||

Riding season is finally here! Motorcycles are hitting the streets. That also means an increase in motorcycle accidents. This raises the question – what should you do if you’re involved in a motorcycle accident? Here is our top 10 list of things to do if you get hit:

  1. Call 911 – it doesn’t matter how small you perceive your injuries to be. It’s critical to document the existence of the accident
  2. Don’t worry about your bike – your health is what’s important. Allow the bike to be towed – do not try to ride it home – you don’t know what damage was done to the bike in the accident
  3. Gather evidence: if you are able, take photos of the scene of the accident, obtain the names and contact information of the other driver and witnesses to the accident, and find out what police department investigated the accident – if you are not able, ask someone to do it for you
  4. Never apologize for getting in an accident – say as little to the other parties as possible
  5. Provide the police accurate information about the accident but do not admit fault
  6. Go to the doctor: the longer you wait to get treatment, the harder it will be to recover for your injuries
  7.  Tell your doctor about any pain you may be feeling. If you fail to report something, it will be difficult to recover for it later
  8. Take photographs: of your bike, the location of the accident and of your injuries, including road rash, swelling, lacerations or abrasions and more – in a lawsuit, a photograph really does tell 1,000 words
  9. If you do report the claim to your insurance company or to the insurance company of the vehicle who hit you – be careful what you say – Insurance companies are not on your side, – and never give a recorded statement to an insurance company without first consulting with a motorcycle accident lawyer
  10. Contact a motorcycle accident lawyer for a free consultation as to your rights
