 Grass Clippings Pose Hazard to Motorcyclists

POSTED BY Andrew Kass||

The grass clippings motorcycle accident statistics bear an astounding truth. It’s hard to think that something so innocuous as grass clippings could lead to a crash, but it’s true. For motorcyclists, grass clippings in the road present a serious danger. When motorcyclists ride over grass clippings, it presents an unsafe road condition. They have to apply their brakes, which can be a problem, especially when there are other vehicles riding close. It can also result in a loss of traction, causing the biker to potentially lose control of their motorcycle.

One big factor in this potentially life-threatening problem: few homeowners understand that this presents a hazard. Fortunately, a number of states and other jurisdictions have put laws on the books that prohibit grass clippings in the road, with some carrying stiff penalties.

Worse than homeowners are lawn care companies that routinely blow grass and debris into the road. Although these things can usually be driven over with no impact by automobiles, they can cause loss of traction for motorcycles.

In Virginia, VA Code 18.2-324 states that grass clippings in the road that present a hazard to vehicles, including bicycles and motorcycles, are in violation of the law. Offenders can be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor which can result in up to 1 year in jail and a $2500 fine.

In Illinois, grass clippings in the road is considered littering and can result in a fine of $1500 for a first offense and a fine of up to $25,000 or up to 3 years in prison for a third offense.

Although some states do not have specific laws with regards to grass clippings, offenders may still be charged for having refuse or debris in the road.
